5 Things I Wish I knew before I started Running (by Chris Lilley)

  1. Running is a skill, the more time you spend learning how to run efficiently the more fun running will be.
  2. Stay in a strong position while you run – keep your core switched on, shoulders back and chest up.
  3. Keep your head up, if you need to look down or around you move your eyes. It is very important to have your airways open, as soon as you move your chin down you are making it much more difficult to breathe.
  4. Running shorter distances really fast gets you running longer distances faster. Doing interval training during the week is just as important as your long run at the end of the week.
  5. Gradually increase the distance you run. A good rule of thumb is to add 5% to your total distance per week. This might not sound like a lot when you start, but it will snowball to a longer distance in the future and it is much better than getting shin splints.
