So in the first post I gave you a bit of a back-story on the press. Now we go through ways to increase your press.
I press 1.3 times my bodyweight so I’m not near what Maxick would prescribe for an elite presser (1.5 times BW) but I’m getting closer and below are the ways that I’ve increased my press over the years.
1. VOLUME! As per the Barbarian brothers “there is no such thing as over training, just under sleeping and under eating”.
2. Change the movement plane in order to increase your volume. Klokov, Bench, Split press, Behind the neck push press, Weighted dips, Keg press, Dead ball press or Yoke presses. Changing the plane with a barbell lift or even an irregular shaped object can help midline stabilisation, increase the strength and keep the movement fresh.
3. Compound it. Press in the strength part of your workout and then again in a wod at lighter weights.
4. Lock out walks. Damn son! Get that bar overhead and go for walk
5. Speed kills. Even during warm up sets (if you believe in that kind of thing) all movements should be done at speed.
6. Know where you get stuck. If it’s in the first third of the movement then Klokov presses, second third then try Savickas press and final third then maybe some lock out walks.
7. Consistency. This goes with anything but you’re not going to get the improvement you want by occasionally pressing. Make it a habit and keep it fresh with different presses
8. Attack it like a boss and learn to embrace the grind.
